Englands Interest or the Great benefit to Trade by Banks or Offices of Credit in London, &c, First edition of this pamphlet explaining the "nature, use, and advantages" of the bank of credit proposed to the Corporation of London by Robert Murray and Hugh Chamberlen. Although the scheme failed, it is often cited as a forerunner of the Bank of England, founded 12 years later. The bank was intended to act primarily as a Lombard bank, in which commodities could be deposited in exchange for credit to be circulated in the form of bills. The scheme sought to facilitate trade by expanding the availability of credit beyond the existing supply of coin.ESTC records two variants of this pamphlet; this is the variant that ends with seven lines of text and "this good and painful undertaking". No priority has been established.
