World Without End. First edition, first impression, notably scarce, especially in the dust jacket. This is the author's second volume of memoirs, following As It Was in 1926. Thomas wrote the two books in an attempt to lift herself out of depression following the death of her husband, the poet Edward Thomas, in 1917.Her tender yet frank account of her married life received mixed reviews on publication. Despite disguising the identities of the book's characters, many friends took objection to the explicit sexual details which ostensibly hurt Edward's (1878-1917) reputation as a war hero. Robert Frost was so appalled by the memoirs that, in later of editions of his Selected Poems, he dropped the book's original dedication to Helen (1877-1967). Her writings have since been reappraised, and World Without End reveals her "exceptional ability to describe the woman's experience as lover, mother, and housewife" (ODNB).
