THE ENGLISH COTEJO: OR, THE CRUELTIES, DEPREDATIONS, AND ILLICIT TRADE CHARG'D UPON THE ENGLISH IN A SPANISH LIBEL LATELY PUBLISHED, COMPARED WITH THE MURDERS, ROBBERIES, BARBARITIES, AND CLANDESTINE ... An anonymous account of the many alleged cruelties perpetrated by the Spanish against the British in the Caribbean, written "By a Sufferer" of such cruelties, and likely published in 1739 amid the outbreak of the War of Jenkins' Ear. The pamphlet is written in direct response to what the author refers to as a "Spanish Libel" entitled Cotejo de la Conducta de S.M. con la de el Rey Britanico… (His Catholick Majesty's Conduct Compared with that of His Britannick Majesty…), first published earlier that year in Madrid, followed shortly thereafter by a dual English/Spanish language edition in London, which accused the English of looting treasure from Spanish shipwrecks off the coast of Florida. Having disputed both the location of these shipwrecks and Spain's right to the waters in which they lay, the author of the English Cotejo goes on to provide examples of "the Insults and Robberies, which the Nation, in general, and our Merchants, in particular, daily suffer'd by the Spanish Rovers in America," describing "the tyrannical, unjustifiable, nay unchristian-like Treatment, the English have experienced" at the hands of the Spanish. Invoking the black legend and a long tradition of anti-Spanish propaganda, the author points to Spain's reputation as "the most cruel Nation in Christend
