£2,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

A smart set of four plates depicting the home of the Marquis de La Fayette (1757-1834). Titled: Northn. View, North-Western-View, Eastn. View, South Western View. Lafayette visited the United States in 1824-5, in part to celebrate the nation's upcoming 50th anniversary, visiting New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Alvan Fisher, an early American landscape painter, would have been present for the celebrations in Boston and was inspired to tour Europe, including Paris and Lafayette's home, in 1825. He witnessed the lithographic process in Paris, commissioned the lithographer Isadore Deroy to draw his paintings of La Grange on stone, returning in September 1826. They are one of the earliest examples of lithographs in America. First edition; folio (43 x 30 cm); 4 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Isidore Laurent Deroy after Alvan Fisher, plates clean; unbound in original printed paper wrappers as issued, preserved in modern chemise slipcase with gilt morocco title label, spine of wrappers torn, otherwise a very good copy.
