A coloured copy of this account of Germany, Sweden, Russia, and Poland, in particular with descriptions of recently burned Moscow. John Thomas James (1786-1828) travelled in Europe for three years before resting in Italy to study art. He returned to Britain to become a vicar and was promoted to Bishop of Calcutta in 1827. First edition; 4to (27.5 x 22 cm); 18 later hand-coloured plates, 10 of which aquatints and 8 of which etchings, in-text plan of Moscow, armorial bookplate to pastedown, small stamp to front free endpaper, a little occasional offsetting and spotting; full contemporary diced calf, gilt spine with gilt lettering piece, board edge corners gilt rolled, extremities a little rubbed, boards a little soiled, otherwise a good copy; viii, [4], 527, [1]pp. Abbey (Travel), 16.
