A$500 · Offered by Harry Hartog Rare Books
Geoffrey Ingleton’s life of Matthew Flinders, paired with a facsimile of the journal Flinders kept through his detention on Mauritius. Beautifully reconstructed by Genesis Publications and limited to 600 sets. Matthew Flinders (1774–1814) was the first to circumnavigate Australia and to urge that the continent be called by that name. In 1803, on his way home after the Investigator voyage, he was detained by the French governor of Mauritius, and he was not released until 1810. The private journal reproduced in volume II is held in the Mitchell Library in Sydney. It covers the years from 1803 to Flinders’s early death in 1814, the day after his Voyage to Terra Australis was published. Geoffrey Ingleton (1908–1998) was a Royal Australian Navy hydrographic officer, etcher and cartographer, and one of Australia’s foremost maritime historians. His other works include Charting a Continent (1944) and True Patriots All (1952). Navigator and Chartmaker was his major work, and in this edition he illustrated it himself, with chart and etching work reproduced throughout the first volume. Genesis issued it as a De Luxe set, with the facsimile journal bound as a companion, and the Duke of Edinburgh wrote the foreword. Volume I: Matthew Flinders, Navigator and Chartmaker. Volume II: Matthew Flinders, Private Journal 1803–1814, the Mitchell Library Manuscript. With a Foreword by H.R.H. The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
