Mary Ellen Mark made these photographs over six weeks in Falkland Road, a red-light district in Mumbai. Highlighting the dehumanising conditions many of these women lived in with empathy and nuance, this series helped secure her reputation as one of the most important social documentary photographers of the late twentieth century.
