GESCHICHTE DER REVOLUTION VON NORD-AMERICA. The third edition of Sprengel's history of the American Revolution, identical to the second except for a cancel titlepage, first published under a different title in 1783. In the preface to his history, read avidly by the Rhinelanders as Hessian mercenaries returned from the war, Sprengel also includes a list of his sources, comprising a good contemporary bibliography of primarily English books on the Revolution. The map depicts the United States, showing the coast from Georgia to Newfoundland. Sprengel published several works on the affairs of the American Revolution, often suffusing them with his personal Enlightenment ideals of democracy and religious tolerance, and has been credited with contributing to the European identification of America with the ideal of "freedom." He was also an abolitionist who wrote several works on the Atlantic slave trade and translated important British anti-slavery tracts into German.
