Pickwickians Abroad. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Dean and Mrs McMurray, With the very best wishes for long life and happiness and grateful thanks from Jean's brother, John Gilbert Reid (Dier Treblig Nhoj). Berkeley, California, August 28, 1929."Reid (b. 1899) was the son of the American missionary-sinologist Gilbert Reid (1857-1927). Published when he was aged just 14, this lively volume situates the characters of Dickens's famous novel in China, America, and other locations during the early 20th century. The recipients were Orrin Kip McMurray, the dean of the law school at UC Berkeley between 1923 and 1936, and Amy Collins Hickox (1875-1970), a singer and vocal coach. The inscription refers to Jean Reynolds Reid (b. 1902), who was perhaps enrolled at the university.
