"GO AHEAD!" DAVY CROCKETT'S ALMANACK, 1838, OF WILD SPORTS IN THE WEST, LIFE IN THE BACKWOODS, SKETCHES OF TEXAS, AND ROWS ON THE MISSISSIPPI. The fourth of the Davy Crockett almanacs, with the usual lively illustrations and fantastical tales, including "A Fight between two Women, a Man and two Bears," "A Narrow Escape from a Snake," "A Kentuckian kivered up in a Salt Crib," "A Boy Killed by a Wild Cat," and many others. This is only the second Crockett almanac published after the man's death, and is the last bearing the imprint "Published by the heirs of Col. Crockett," before publishing duties were taken over by "Ben Harding" for the start of Vol. 2. This issue also notably contains the story of Crockett taking a pot shot at Santa Anna while he was surveying the Alamo, "which so enraged the General, that he resolved to storm the fort the next day." "'Mike Fink, the Ohio Boatman' is perhaps the first reference to the legendary Mike of the Crockett almanacs" - Streeter."It was the Crockett Almanacks which made Crockett a legendary figure and a part of American folk-lore" - Grolier American Hundred.
