This "scathing feminist anatomy of war, sexism, and power" takes place in a fascist dystopia where the Nazis and the Empire of Japan have conquered the world (Clute).This edition features a new preface by the author commenting on the international developments since the publication of the 1937 first edition: "While the author has not in the least changed his opinion that the Nazi idea is evil, and that we must fight... he has changed his mind about the Nazi power to make the world evil... He further feels that Nazism is too bad to be permanent, and that the appalling upheaval though which the world is passing is a symbol of birth, and that out of it will emerge a higher stage of humanity" (p. 4).Burdekin's pseudonym was revealed in the 1980s by the feminist scholar Daphne Patai; her writing has since garnered serious academic interest. Writing under an alias allowed Burdekin to interrogate the masculine element of fascist ideology, set in a world where Hitler is venerated as a God, language has been distorted by propaganda, and women are reduced to their reproductive roles.
