The Czech artist and graphic novelist - the first woman to publish in that medium - illustrates the Swedish Nobel laureate's biblical short story, which was written to raise funds for Jewish refugees and as a protest against Nazi fascism.Bochořáková-Dittrichová (1894-1980) brought her own distinct style to the woodcut technique and is best known for her "wordless novel", From My Childhood (1929), the first graphic novel by a woman. Inspired by her own experiences as much as by world history and religion, Bochořáková-Dittrichová "quietly strengthened the case for topics such as domestic life to be seen as legitimate art subjects rather than as easily dismissed female fodder" (Rebecca Gross, quoted by Brooks)."The Writing on the Ground" was first published in 1933 in Swedish.
