A POLITICAL AND CIVIL HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FROM THE YEAR 1763 TO THE CLOSE OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, IN MARCH, ... Standard early history of the United States, with a good deal of material on the Revolution and Washington's administration. A graduate of Yale and member of the American Antiquarian Society, Timothy Pitkin (1766–1847) was a lawyer, politician, and historian from Connecticut. Believing that "the people of the United States" were already familiar with "the military events" of the Revolutionary period, Pitkin, with his Political and Civil History of the United States, sought to offer "a connected view of the political and civil transactions of our country, unmixed with military events, except so far as the latter had an influence on the former." As historian Michael Kraus notes, Pitkin's History gives "much space to the negotiations between the colonies and England, between the new states and France, the formation of the Confederation and the internal difficulties of the fledgling American governments," and his "strong interest in finance led him to stress the subject of public credit." Each volume includes an appendix containing dozens of sources and documents. "Pitkin was an industrious, careful scholar who wrote from original sources" - Larned.
