Zur Genealogie der Moral. First edition, one of 600 copies of Nietzsche's second privately printed work, a collection of three essays that ranks among his more intentionally accessible texts. Nietzsche's discussion of the need to sacrifice instinctual pleasures in pursuit of greater civilization proved to be a strong influence on Freud's work in Civilization and Its Discontents.Following the relatively muted reception of Jenseits von Gut und Böse (Beyond Good and Evil) the previous year, Nietzsche deliberately structured this follow-on work to gain a wider audience for his philosophy. The first essay considers the origins of our notions of "good" and "evil"; the second examines the concept of a "bad conscience", while the third severely criticised Christian asceticism.
