1846 - 1882. THE FIRST REGIMENT OF NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS COMMANDED BY COL. JONATHAN D. STEVENSON, IN THE MEXICAN WAR. NAMES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE REGIMENT DURING ITS TERM OF SERVICE IN UPPER AND LOWER ... Inscribed by the author in the year of publication. This is the Thomas W. Norris copy, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. First edition, one of apparently three issues, printed in an edition of some 400 copies, primarily for survivors of Stevenson's Regiment. Copies are found with only the portrait of Colonel Stevenson, or with two portraits and an appendix dated 1883. This copy is without the appendix but adds the portrait of compiler Francis D. Clark along with the frontispiece portrait of Stevenson. The later appendix (dated August 1, 1883) which is found in many copies, including the Graff copy, is not present here, indicating this copy is of the earlier issues. A list of survivors dated 1895 is laid in to some copies, not present in this copy. This is the best history of Stevenson's regiment of New York Volunteers during the Mexican-American War. Sent to California, they saw little action, but the regiment has gone down in history due to the accomplishments of its survivors during the Gold Rush and in business, politics, and vigilante activities in California. They were instrumental in founding the mining town of Volcano, initially called Soldier's Gulch, in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Francis D.
