I'm offering a 1984 First American Edition hardcover of A Heritage of Shadows by Madeleine Brent, published by Doubleday & Company in Garden City, New York, complete with its original illustrated dust jacket. The copyright page explicitly states FIRST EDITION, and the original dust jacket retains its $15.95 publisher's price. Madeleine Brent was the pseudonym of British author Peter O'Donnell, best known as the creator of the celebrated Modesty Blaise adventure series. Under the Brent name, O'Donnell wrote a distinctive series of historical romantic suspense novels combining mystery, danger, strong female protagonists, and atmospheric period settings. Set in 1890, A Heritage of Shadows follows Hannah McLeod, a young Englishwoman living in Paris while concealing a frightening secret from her past. After helping a stranger attacked by Montmartre thugs, Hannah becomes entangled in circumstances that send her back to England and into the mysterious household of Sebastian Ryder. There she must confront secrets surrounding her own identity and the strange name "Butterfly Girl." This is the original 1984 American hardcover edition, rather than one of the later paperback reprints. The first British edition was published by Souvenir Press in 1983.
