Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington

The China Mission Hand-Book. First Issue. First edition, rare in commerce, commercial records showing only one other copy in the last two decades. The publication was effusively welcomed by the Chinese and religious periodical press, for it satisfied long-standing demand for a comprehensive and easily accessible survey. The contents offer textual and statistical descriptions of the state of missionary work in different Chinese provinces and cities, alongside articles by Timothy Richard and other missionaries on secret societies and on Buddhism, Taoism, and Islam. Part II, the survey of recent progress, is subdivided into the dozens of Western groups proselytizing in the country by century's end. Emphasis is placed on educational and medical work and, where applicable, the operations of printing presses.
