Four Virtues to Save Society or English Essays on Chinese Culture. First edition, with an October 1935 typed letter signed from the author, a Canadian missionary, to the London bookseller Arthur Probsthain, in which Brace discusses sending Probsthain two copies of his book (presumably including this example) and its positive reception among students learning English in Chengdu. We have traced only three copies institutionally (Columbia, Toronto, and the Claremont Colleges).Albert James Brace (1877-1948) was the general secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association in Chengdu, holding the position for 25 years. Designed to meet demand for materials, this bilingual selection includes translations - by Brace and other figures such as Madame Chiang Kai-Shek - of Confucian texts and information on the New Life Movement, Chiang Kai-Shek's nationwide effort to instil new virtues and ideas of citizenship. This copy remained with Arthur Probsthain Bookshop until a portion of its legacy stock was dispersed in 2024.
