The Religion of the Samurai: A Study of Zen Philosophy and Discipline in China and Japan. First edition of the second book on Zen to appear in English, preceded only by Soyen Shaku's Sermons of a Buddhist Abbot (1906) and much rarer in commerce. Nukariya (1867-1934), a Soto monk and a friend of D. T. Zazuki, wrote while living and teaching at Harvard. His book argues that "spirit and ethic of Zen is essentially identical with that of the samurai, and he waxes poetic on the great generals of old Japan, whose 'loyalty, wisdom, bravery, and prudence are not merely unique in the history of Japan, but perhaps in the history of man'" (Sharf, p. 115).
