Photographic panorama postcard. A souvenir of German's strategically and economically important Chinese port, addressed by a sailor in the Imperial German Navy to a correspondent in Hamburg. The panorama, by an unknown photographer, looks across the growing city to its natural harbour.During the late-19th-century foreign scramble for influence in China, Germany acquired control of Qingdao to protect against expanding Russian influence in north China. It administered the territory from 1898 to 1914. Qingdao's beautiful beaches and the nearby mountain of Laoshan made it a popular tourist destination.
