Peking: A Guidebook. First edition of the first English-language guide to the capital of communist China. "Peking, which was built through the labours of the Chinese working people... has come back into the hands of the people themselves. It is now the capital of the Chinese people and the main bulwark of peace in Asia" (p. 6).Aside from the political introduction, the guide is markedly less inflected than those that appeared in the late 1950s and 1960s. The first plate shows Tiananmen, complete with the Mao portrait and slogans installed for the 1 October 1949 founding ceremony.
