To the Alps of Chinese Tibet: First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by John Walter Gregory to his sister and brother-in-law on the front free endpaper, "Annie J. & H. J. Nicholson, from the authors, J. W. Gregory", and signed by his son and co-author, Christopher Gregory, below.John Gregory (1864-1932) was appointed as an assistant in the British Museum's geological department in 1887. In the early 20th century, following election to the Royal Society in 1901 and a short period spent as the director of the civilian scientific staff for Scott's Discovery Expedition, he held a series of academic appointments in Australia and then Great Britain. In 1922, together with his son, Gregory undertook a four-month, 1500-mile walk through Burma into south-western China and Tibet - "a land of alluring geographical enigmas" (p. 17). They returned with many zoological and botanical collections.Anne Jane Gregory (1862-1944), his older sister, shared his interest in geology, joining him in 1891 on his first trip outside of Europe, when he travelled to America to participate in the 5th International Geological Congress and journey westwards to study the Rockies and the Great Basin. She acted as his lawyer when he was seeking an academic position and provided considerable logistical support for his expeditions. By the beginning of the 20th century, she was married to Henry Jarries Nicholson (1860-1944), a solicitor and John Gregory's executor.
