Spotlight on Singapore. First edition. Lieutenant-Colonel Denis Russell-Roberts was an Indian Army officer who was present at the fall of Singapore. This narrative of his wartime experiences captures the shock of the British defeat, the day-to-day struggles of internees, moments of levity, and the personal costs of the conflict in Asia. His wife, Ruth, died in January 1945 in a prison camp in Indonesia. In the preface, he specially mentions a "sergeant pilot of the Japanese Air Force who was in charge of my party on the aerodrome at Changi in the autumn of 1944. It was through this man's humanity and courage that the one letter I was able to send to Ruth during those years in separate prison camps reached her in January, 1945. Ten months' exhaustive enquiry through the Japanese Defence Department in Tokyo has led to the conclusion that he was killed in battle at some date in 1945. I salute his memory."
