Renmin jiefangjun daju fangong ("The People's Liberation Army Begins Its Great Counterattack"). A scarce contemporary edition, printed on homespun paper for small-scale distribution, of this important Chinese Communist Party editorial issued to coincide with Mao's launch of a major offensive in the north-east, which marked a turning point in the civil war. The article, the first text to use the slogan "strike down Chiang Kai-Shek by force", was personally revised in the drafting stages by Mao and published in the People's Daily on 14 September 1947.Mao's revisions included adding the sentence "To have peace, we must first destroy Chiang Kai-Shek; to have food to eat, we must first destroy Chiang Kai-Shek; to have democracy, we must first destroy Chiang Kai-Shek; to have independence, we must first destroy Chiang Kai-Shek - this is already commonly understood in China."
