Slowly Down the Ganges. First edition, signed by the author on the title page and by the dedicatee, his fellow traveller Wanda Newby, on the dedication page. "When asked if there was one thing he couldn't travel without, Newby said simply: 'My wife.' He did not enjoy going without her, and nor, he said, could he write without the dialogue she provided" (The Guardian obituary). This work describes their 1,200-mile journey undertaken in 1963-4, during which they travelled by boat, rail, bus, and cart. In the acknowledgements, the author thanks the British retailer John Lewis "for sacking me from the Central Buyership of Model 'Gowns' retailing at ten guineas and upwards. By doing so they enabled me not only to make this journey but also to join that distinguished body of ex-partners which includes Mr George Brown, MP, and Miss Audrey Hepburn."
