Shice Hangzhou Xihu tu ("Map of Hangchow and West Lake and Environs"). First edition, first printing, of this large and rare map identifying major landmarks and features in both Chinese and English. The picturesque city is most closely associated with the poet Su Shi, whose careful stewardship of Hangzhou restored the West Lake to its former glory and preserved its beauty for generations to come. We have traced a single institutional copy only (University of Manchester). The scenery and calm of Hangzhou has inspired numerous poets and artists from the Tang dynasty down to the present day, including the Tang master Bai Juyi and the Yuan dynasty's Zhao Mengfu. An inset map shows the Gushan region of outstanding natural beauty.
