Banner celebrating the opening of the ninth congress of the Chinese Communist Party. A colourful piece of political iconography produced at the height of the Mao cult. The April 1969 ninth congress, the "congress of victors" (MacFarquhar & Schoenhals, p. 285), was designed to reassert state control over the Cultural Revolution and cement the political positions of the factions that had emerged victorious from years of infighting.Mao, framed against a red sun in the centre, is surrounded by nine symbolic stars and text reading "Wishing Chairman Mao a long life without end". The sunflowers at the foot and the red characters for "loyalty" represent all the people of China striving to bask in Mao's revolutionary glow.
