Zum Continent des eisgen Südens. First edition, with a printed presentation leaf from the author loosely inserted. Drygalski, the first to use a gas balloon in Antarctica, provides the first detailed scientific information on Heard Island's flora, fauna, and geology. The expedition explored the unknown area south of the Kerguelen Islands. Erich von Drygalski (1865-1949) led the expedition on the ship Gauss and discovered Kaiser Wilhelm II Land and its volcano, the Gaussberg. The expedition lasted from 1901 to 1903, and Drygalski and his crew were trapped on the ice for 14 months. This account is the first of several books and atlases Drygalski published on his return. "The text includes the background to the expedition, brief biographies, details of the ship and general outfit, the general narrative and summary of scientific accomplishments" (Rosove).
