£4,500 · Offered by Maggs Bros Ltd
Very rare: printed by the important Germantown printer, Christoph Sauer, this almanac contains the first illustration of a kangaroo printed in America . While most of the illustrations in this piece are by Justus Fox, both the image of the kangeroo, and the text, are after that of Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771) who was a botanical draftsman on Cook’s first voyage. The image was published in the offical account by John Hawkesworth (London, 1773). Parkinson’s posthumously-printed account, A Journal of a Voyage to the South Seas, in His Majesty’s Ship The Endeavour first appeared in the same year. Evans 13332; Hildeburn, C.R. Pennsylvania, 3030; Drake, M. Almanacs, 1004; Botte Tannhof. German printing, 435.
