The first Spanish edition of Henry George's landmark work of economic theory and philosophy, originally published in 1879. George's Progress and Poverty quickly sold millions of copies, propelling the author to international recognition and launching him to the forefront of a world-wide political and economic movement. The core of George's ideology as expressed in this work was the single tax, in this case a single land value tax. By taxing land but not labor, George saw the way for America to maintain its traditions of entrepreneurial freedom while promoting equity. The book quickly found an eager audience and earned its reputation as "the most significant of American works on economics," becoming one of the best-selling books in English in the last two decades of the 19th century and soon translated into over a dozen languages (Grolier American 100). Georgism found considerable success in Spain in the decades following this first Spanish edition, particularly in the interwar period when Seville and Catalonia each implemented their own land value taxes.
