First edition

One of the most powerful and haunting art books of the twentieth century. I Never Saw Another Butterfly collects the drawings and poems made by Jewish children imprisoned at Terezín concentration camp between 1942 and 1944. The drawings capture, with heartbreaking clarity, both the terror of their situation and the resilience of the human spirit. Of the 15,000 children who passed through Terezín, fewer than 100 survived. The artwork was secretly preserved by Czech artist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, who taught the children to draw as an act of resistance. Compiled by Hana Volavková of the Jewish Museum in Prague. Printed in Czechoslovakia with full fidelity to the original artwork. First Schocken paperback edition, 1978
