Denoted the second edition on the titlepage, though preceded by printings in Hartford of 1818 and 1819. A good contemporary account of Monroe's northeastern tours. Monroe conducted his tour at the very outset of his administration, followed shortly by another inspection of the South and Southwest. The chief aim of the tour was to allow inspection of the American defenses as they stood along the border with Canada. It consumed three months, during which Monroe travelled as far west as Detroit. This is one of two contemporary accounts published of the tour, the other being Monroe's Narrative of a Tour of Observation..., published in 1818 and relating more to military matters. The work additionally includes a biographical sketch, the text of his inaugural address, and related correspondence.
