Bernacchi's account of Borchgrevink's Southern Cross expedition to Cape Adare includes scientific results as well as a narrative noted for its literary merit. 'The original cloth binding of this first issue is quite friable, with the result that few copies survive in truly fine condition. Apparently, the fault was soon noticed, as a second issue was produced that year bound in a more durable red cloth' (Taurus). First edition, first issue. 8vo, xvi, 348, [4] (ads) pp., large tear to map, mild browning and foxing to end-papers, original green cloth gilt, rubbed and bumped at extremities, a few minor scratches to front board, overall a very good copy.
