The Drowned World. First hardback edition, the publisher's file copy, with Gollancz's "Archive Copy" stamp on the title page and the rear cover annotated with the year of publication. The book was published in the less desirable paperback format in America earlier the same year by Berkley.The Drowned World takes place in the year 2145 in a flooded version of London with a tropical climate caused by global warming. Together with Ballard's The Crystal World (1966), it has been identified as a founding text in climate fiction, written before climate change had been widely identified by scientists (Clarke).
