First edition, inscribed by Quine to the public intellectual Bryan Magee on the front free endpaper, "To Bryan, a philosophical novel, to a philosopher novelist. Happy landings, happy hassles, happy hustings! Van, Boston, 24/IX/79". By 1979, Bryan Magee (1930-2019) was established both as a popular broadcaster on philosophy and as a political figure, presenting a landmark series on Men of Ideas in 1978 and representing the Leyton constituency since 1974. Quine was the interviewee of Episode 9 of Men of Ideas, which he felt captured the most direct and concise version of his philosophy.The Last Puritan, an exploration of the self-contradictions of American puritanism, was the second best-selling novel in the United States in 1936, surpassed only by Gone with the Wind.
