A DICTIONARY OF THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE. Hawaii's first Supreme Court Chief Justice and third Governor's copy of an important Hawaiian reference work, with over two dozen pages of his handwritten notes laid in. This copy belonged to Walter Francis Frear (1863-1948), a judge who served in the Hawaiian provisional government's Supreme Court, as Chief Justice of the Territory of Hawaii's Supreme Court after annexation, and as the Islands' third Territorial Governor, from 1907 to 1913. In addition to his ownership inscription, twenty-six pages of his manuscript notes written in the Hawaiian language are laid in.This is the first reprint, sixty years after initial publication, of "one of the fundamental books on Hawaii....the first full-scale dictionary of the Hawaiian language and the basis of all subsequent dictionaries" (Forbes). Lorrin Andrews labored on the Hawaiian vocabulary for thirty years, and his dictionary was the culmination of his life's work. Just like the first edition, this 1922 edition was printed with the assistance of the Hawaiian government, to meet the "need of an authoritative reference book for the spelling, pronunciation, and definition of Hawaiian words." It also reprints the original preface by Andrews and introduction by William DeWitt Alexander, which Forbes calls "a fine scholarly essay on the origin of the Hawaiian language."A unique association copy of an important Hawaiian reference work.
