This copy belonged to the important early missionary and medical doctor, Dwight Baldwin, and bears his ownership inscription (dated 1844) on the front free endpaper. Jarves traces the history and culture of the islands from the early period, including Hawaiian mythology and traditional origin stories, the visit of Cook in 1778, the influx of missionaries in the 1820s and 30s, and even the Provisional Cession which occurred just shortly before publication. The book is decorated with in-text illustrations and plates, which are a combination of original works and illustrations adapted from those made on Cook's third voyage. Jarves was the founder and editor of the POLYNESIAN, one of Hawaii's earliest weekly newspapers - a position which gave him access to period documents which he used in preparing this as well as several other books on Hawaii and its history.
