Report of proceedings on a voyage to the northern ports of China
£650 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
author's wife's copy Hugh Lindsay's Report of Proceedings contains reports by Lindsay, an East India Company man, and Charles Gutzlaff on trade with China and Corea. The aim of the mission was to ascertain how far the northern ports of China might be opened to trade with the British. In the second work Lindsay argues that the trade in opium was not illegal and that Breitain should launch a large-scale military intervention in China. Second edition of both works; 2 vols in 1, 8vo; contemporary calf gilt, sometime neatly rebacked, red morocco label, light wear to corners and edges, a very good copy; iv, 296; 40 pp. 1. Cf. Lust 619 (first ed). 2. Cordier, Sinica, 2361; Lust 562.
