The Good Soldier. A Tale of Passion. Signed limited edition, number 152 of 300 copies signed by the author on the front free endpaper as issued, here retaining its rare slipcase. Ford's novel "is a masterpiece of modernist technique, using an unreliable narrator to piece together a complex plot of sexual intrigue and betrayal through elaborate time-shifts" (ODNB).This limited edition includes a new dedicatory letter to Stella Ford, in which the author explains how the work "remains my great auk's egg for me as being something of a race that will have no successors". He also recalls that his original title, "The Saddest Story", was rejected by the publisher as unsaleable following the outbreak of the Great War, and that he was horrified to learn his publisher took up his ironic suggestion of "The Good Soldier" upon its publication in 1915.
