HAWAI HONORURU ANNAI [printed in Japanese]. [TOURISM GUIDE FOR HONOLULU, HAWAII]. A brightly printed and well-preserved piece of Hawaii ephemera for visitors from Japan. This brochure, put together by the Aala Automobile Union sometime around 1930, was given to visitors arriving by ship. It features a street map of Honolulu and brief descriptions of attractions, accompanied by a photographic illustration in each panel, printed entirely in Japanese. Among the attractions are the Moanalua Gardens, Diamond Head, Nuuanu Pali, the Bishop Museum of Natural History, and a bronze statue of Kamehameha I. The reverse of the city map includes a small map of the island of Oahu accompanied by some details about the geography and population, and advertises tours of other attractions operated by Aala. A very rare and interesting look at Japanese tourism in Hawaii prior to World War II. OCLC records copies at the International Resource Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken) in Kyoto and at the Huntington Library.
