Mandrake Over the Water-Carrier. First edition, inscribed by the author: "To Richard Jennings, with love from the author. August 1928". Jennings was the literary editor and leader writer of the Daily Mirror between 1904 and 1942. Mandrake Over the Water-Carrier, the author's third novel, is a symbolic and semi autobiographical tale of a group of people living on the Channel Islands.Edward Sackville-West (1901-1965), a cousin of Vita, was a music critic as well as a novelist. He had a wide range of literary associates, including several members of the Bloomsbury Group. In his review of Mandrake Over the Water-Carrier novel, L.P. Hartley described Sackville-West as "one of the most interesting of the younger novelists" (Saturday Review, p. 842).
