THE CONQUEST OF THE ILLINOIS. Lakeside Press reprint of Clark's memoirs, with historical introduction by editor Milo Quaife. This is number eighteen in the Lakeside Classics series.Colonel George Clark was one of the most important figures in the American West during the Revolution, and his campaign in Illinois country is one of the main reasons that land came to the newborn United States in the Treaty of 1783. "Valuable for a knowledge not only of the events of the American occupation, but also of the conditions in the French villages and the character of the country at the time" - Buck. Clark was apparently not as talented a writer as he was a leader, on account of which Quaife chose to "undertake to turn [his account] into clear and grammatical English" with this Lakeside Press edition.
