ACROSS THE PLAINS IN FORTY-NINE. Lakeside Press reprint of Shaw's 1896 original, with introduction from historian and editor Milo Quaife. Quaife's introduction here is apparently reprinted in the 1976 edition on which Mattes bases his entry. This is number forty-six in the Lakeside Classics series.Shaw, originally from Boston, was a member of the Mt. Washington Mining Company, who traveled from Boston by boat to Independence then overland to Fort Kearny and eventually to Sacramento. While Shaw is fond of providing specific dates and vivid descriptions of landscapes, the clear discrepancies between his account and accounts from his traveling companions reveal his memory to be spotty at best.
