First edition of Vargas Llosa's first novel, which won the 1962 Biblioteca Breve Prize, an award given to the best unpublished work of fiction in the Spanish language, and the 1963 Premio de la Crítica Española.The novel is based on Vargas Llosa's own experiences of Leoncio Prado Military Academy. The portrayal of the school, and the section of Peruvian society whose sons attended it, was so scathing that its leadership burned a thousand copies in an official ceremony and condemned it as Ecuadorian propaganda.
