AUDUBON AND HIS JOURNALS. With Zoological and Other Notes by Elliott Coues. A handsomely-produced compilation of John James Audubon's journals produced by his granddaughter, Maria Audubon, and "With Zoological and Other Notes" by Elliott Coues. The selections of Audubon's writings here include his trips to Europe (1826-29), Labrador (1833), and the Missouri River (1843), followed by episodes in Kentucky, Ohio, Natchez, Florida, and elsewhere. It is still a primary reference on the famous naturalist, with numerous illustrated plates, including three previously unpublished bird drawings and ten portraits of Audubon. From an advertisement for the book's publication:"The whole publication is virtually new; since even the European journals are here much amplified, while the Missouri and Labrador journals are practically unpublished, and the 'Episodes' have never before appeared collectively except in a French translation; while on the whole are supplemented by the valuable notes of so eminent a zoologist as Dr. Elliott Coues."
