A Pale View of Hills. First edition, with a slip of paper signed by the author loosely inserted. Ishiguro's first novel received the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize in the year of publication. A contemporary review of the work in the New York Times noted that "its characters, whose bursts of self-knowledge and honesty erase their inspired self-deceptions only briefly, are remarkably convincing. It is filled with surprise and written with considerable charm. But what one remembers is its balance, halfway between elegy and irony". In 2017, Ishiguro was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his "novels of great emotional force" that have "uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world".
