L'ITINÉRAIRE DES FRANÇAIS DANS LA LOUISIANE.... First edition of this exceedingly rare French imprint promoting the possession of Louisiana in the early 19th century. It was published during the brief return of France's control of the territory between the Spanish and American periods of ownership between March and December 1803. The large folding map, "Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Mississipi avec les Colonies Anglaises," is a revised version of Guillaume Delisle's map first published in 1718. The work includes a history and description of the colony, a description of the natives of the area and their customs, and the state of commerce in the region. Dubroca, who evidently published the work himself, argues for a much greater French presence in Louisiana.The Streeter copy was bought by Nebenzahl for $1500 in 1968.
