The poet laureate, Cecil Day Lewis wrote a number of detective works under the name Nicholas Blake, of which this title is by far the best regarded. Copies of this UK printing in this condition with the jacket are extremely uncommon. First edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's orange cloth, titles to spine in black, mild partial browning to the endpapers, trace of erasure to front free endpaper, with the dust-jacket, some mild ghosting to the spine through the jacket but an exceptional copy in the little tanned and very slightly rubbed dust-jacket.
