£4,500 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

First edition of this important monograph on Kashgar, in the original wrappers. Kuropatkin (1848 - 1925), a Russian military commander, compiled the text after his diplomatic mission to what is nowadays the Western most part of China. The aim was to re-establish Russian borders after in 1876 one of the most ancient of the independent states of Central Asia, the Khanate of Kokand, ceased to exist. An English translation appeared in Calcutta in 1882 as suspicions began to rise of Russia's political and military designs in the area. This Russian edition is decidedly rarer than the later English edition. First edition, 4to (27.5 x 18 cm); [2],iv, 435pp., large folding map at the rear printed in four colours, pages uncut; in the original wrappers, wear to edges and spine with some small loss, minor water stains, pencil annotations to upper cover, a very good copy.
