The Palm-Wine Drinkard.

£3,750 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books

With the author's superb presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, '(Arry) / Big Harry is leaving town. / Big Harry is leaving us, / I hope he will not forget us, / As Accra will not forget Big Harry/ MADE FOR POSTERITY BY Jenny and Malcolm Accra JULY 1959.' We have solved the riddle. Big Harry is Harold Macmillan who had, at the time of the inscription just begun his second term in the office as Prime Minister. His principal campaigning pledge had been finally to withdraw from all Britain's sub-Saharan colonies, including, of course Ghana. This was not met with universal approbation even from those staunch campaigners for independence like Tutuola. An astounding copy of the author's first book. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author; 8vo; publisher's red cloth, titles to spine gilt, with the dust jacket. Very good in the slightly frayed and chipped dust jacket.
